The Cleveland National Forest provided an opportunity to visit Lyons Peak Lookout for an inspection. Law Enforcement escorts are currently required to visit the peak.

We found the Lookout to be in good general shape. The cab will require the following work before considering staffing of the structure:

  • Fix roof leak

  • Replace and paint ceiling panels

  • Replace VCT tile floor

  • Build Fire-Finder Stand

  • Locate Osborne Fire-Finder and stand

  • Replace No. 1 glass pane

  • Refurbish and paint all cabinets

  • Add communications equipment and lookout inventory

  • Restore electric power

Lyons Peak has outstanding views south into Mexico, West to San Diego Bay and North to Palomar. The road is partially paved and easily navigated by 2WD high clearance vehicles.

The bolt holes and concrete steps are still visible on the rock where the 1913 lookout was located.
