"High Point Lookout, Cleveland, In-Service 0914" And with those words, spoken over the Forest Net Radio on Saturday, June 13, 2009--High Point Lookout Station became operational for the first time in 17 years. Dispatch asked for our weather a few minutes later...hopefully we read it back correctly! 4 FFLA Volunteers were on hand for the historic day along with the Forest Public Affairs Officer, the Forest Service Area Communications Technician, and a Palomar District Fire Patrol Technician. We enjoyed a slice of Julian Pie in celebration of our accomplishments. We installed additional solar panels and a charging monitor to increase power output for the station systems. The last 4 doors were added and painted for the cabinets. We installed a crucial piece of lookout equipment as well...a vintage pencil sharpener! All of the construction tools and materials were removed from the cab. Our "High Point Lookout Station" sign was delivered. We received a last minute donation of a mattress for our bed so the Tower Leader could have peaceful night of sleep on the tower. We enjoyed a partly cloudy day with temperatures in the 50's...a little cool for June in Southern California, even at 6000 feet. Our official dedication day will soon be scheduled with all systems, structure and safety plans signed off. Engineering and site work remain to be done...but we are moving forward with 21st Century Fixed Point Fire Detection... |
